Can You Find A Job In 14 Days?
If you currently have no LinkedIn, no Facebook and no Twitter you could be doubling the time it will take you to find a job. Unless you know people in high places (and lets face it not many of us do) you could be trawling job websites for weeks or even months before:
A. You get an interview Or B. Find a job you actually want to do
In 2 short weeks I believe that from having no online presence to having every type of social media profile available to you, an interview will be on the horizon. Find below the first 7 steps to get an interview sooner rather than later.
1. Go Old School - Research companies your interested in working for, take note of vacancies and job descriptions.
2. CV - Start your CV from scratch. Do not just edit the one you have because making a new one will give you a fresher look at your CV. Use keywords from job vacancies your interested in and try to avoid CV clichés such as ‘work well in a team’ and ‘hard-working’ these things really should be a given. Try and focus on the things which make you different from everyone else.
3. Join Twitter - Sign up to Twitter it is easy, takes 5 minutes and you will be guided through the whole process. ‘Follow’ Job agencies. You can do this by just putting ‘job’ or ‘technology job’ in the search box and you will start receiving updates on vacancies relevant to you.
4. Join LinkedIn - Make a profile on LinkedIn. This can take an hour or two but when done properly you will come up more often when people search for keywords contained in your profile. You can ‘import’ your CV to your profile so you do not have to re-type everything you have already put into your CV.
5. Join Groups - On LinkedIn it is imperative that you join groups this is how you will link to those all important connections. When joining groups just search for groups in the industry relevant to what you want to do. Get chatting with people, network and add them at every opportunity.
6. Link, Link, Link - Link your Twitter and LinkedIn profiles and try to update it daily to keep your profile at the top of search results.
7. Finally – Keep on top of your profiles reply to messages promptly and message professionals telling them what kind of work you are looking for. (That is how I got my last 2 jobs)
If you have time I would also suggest blog writing and reading industry news so your up to date with what is going on. Points 1-4 can be done in a day the rest needs to be done everyday the more you connect the more people will want to connect with you.
